Red Wings Will Open 2015-16 Season Against Former Coach Mike Babcock, Maple Leafs

The NHL must love creating drama because former Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will return to the Joe in Detroit’s home opener next season.

Babcock left Detroit after ten years as head coach this offseason to lead Toronto in an eight-year, $50 million deal. The Red Wings open the 2015-16 season October 9 at Joe Louis Arena against the Maple Leafs. This will be Jeff Blashill’s first season as head coach of the Red Wings, who many already expected to take over the reins before Babcock left.

As DetroitRedWings.com reports, Toronto holds a 4-3-3 all-time record in Red Wings home openers. It will be interesting to see if Babcock, who won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008, will be cheered or boo’d by the Joe Louis Arena crowd.
