A pair of costly turnovers come back to haunt the Red Wings as the Hurricanes blow past Detroit 3-1.
A relatively ho-hum first period saw one minor skirmish that resulted in the lone man advantage. Tomas Tatar mixed it up with Hurricanes LW Nathan Gerbe following a collision between the two. Tatar picked up a two-minute roughing while Gerbe was assessed with a double minor. Nevertheless, the Red Wings failed to register a shot on goal with the extra man. Detroit finished the first period with a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. The pace picked up late in the period after the teams had registered just 3 SOG a piece at the 11:00 mark of the opening frame.
The Red Wings struggles in the faceoff circles (5-11, 31% in the first period) carried into the second period, one that started out very physical and ended without a penalty being called until the final minute. With both teams looking for a lucky break, the Hurricanes found it when Red Wings G Petr Mrazek came out of the net to play a puck ahead only to clear it right into the chest of Hurricanes C Victor Rask who skated around Mrazek and dumped it in to give Carolina a 1-0 lead at the 12:26 mark.
Jakub Kindl provided the equalizer at 17:44 when the Tomas Jurco's forecheck forced a poor pass by Hurricanes D Ron Hainsey and Kindl capitalized on a shot from the blue line that ricocheted off Hurricanes C Jay McClement's leg and into the net. The goal was Kindl's first of the season while Jurco's assist was his first point of the season in just his third game. Jurco took Landon Ferraro's spot in the lineup. Ferraro was a healthy scratch.
The Red Wings opened the third period by killing off part of Justin Abdelkader's boarding penalty that came with 14 seconds left in the 2nd period. The Hurricanes killed off the rest when C Eric Staal got the gate for tripping 51 seconds into the third.
Shortly after the teams got back to even strength, Hainsey made up for his error on Kindl's goal by rifling home the go-ahead tally to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead. Hainsey's laser was complements of a Niklas Kronwall pass that went off the stick of Jurco on the nearside boards.
Hainsey's goal came at the 4:35 mark. The Red Wings would go on to muster just seven shots in the third period, due in large part to a pair of untimely penalties on Riley Sheahan and Jakub Kindl.
Staal tacked on an empty netter to account for the final 3-1 margin and help Hurricanes G Cam Ward improved to a lifetime 4-7-1 against the Red Wings
Mrazek suffered his first career loss against the Hurricanes falling to 3-1-0 against Carolina.
The Red Wings were without D Mike Green (Shoulder) and D Kyle Quincey (Concussion) for the second straight game after both were injured in Calgary last Friday.
