According to various sources, the Red Wings will name Jeff Blashill head coach sometime next week at Joe Louis Arena. The 41-year-old Blashill, who will become the second-youngest head coach in the NHL, is expected to receive a three-year contract. Blashill is now available after the Grand Rapids Griffins were eliminated Tuesday in Game 6 of the AHL Western Conference finals by the Utica. Blashill is expected to conduct exit interviews with the Griffins on Monday. He won the Calder Cup championship with Grand Rapids in 2013 and was named the AHL coach of the year in 2014. There is a coaching vacancy in Detroit after Mike Babcock left for the Toronto Maple Leafs on May 20.
