Texas Tech Dismisses Recruit After Punching Female Basketball Player

Texas Tech cut a new recruit after he punched a woman in the face during a pickup basketball game.

ESPN reports that incoming freshman Nigel Bethel II assaulted Texas Tech women's basketball star Amber Battle on campus over the weekend. Battle will have to undergo surgery due to a broken bone.

The school released the following statement:

"Nigel Bethel II, a Texas Tech football student-athlete, has been dismissed from the team due to his role in an incident at the Texas Tech Student Recreation Center on Saturday, June 28. Texas Tech Athletics has a zero tolerance policy on this type of behavior."

Leading the Red Raiders in scoring, Battle averaged 16.4 points per game last season. She also led the team in rebounds and assists, which earned her a spot on the second team All-Big 12.

Bethel, from Miami, Fla., was Texas Tech's highest rated recruit among incoming freshmen. Along with football, he was expected to join the track team.
