The Pistons will be the latest Detroit team to have a minor league affiliate based in Grand Rapids, Mich.
MLive reports that the NBA Development League team Springfield Armor in Massachusetts will be purchased by an undisclosed group and relocate the franchise to West Michigan. The team will play at the DeltaPlex Arena in Walker, which is north of Grand Rapids.
The Detroit Pistons will establish a single-franchise affiliation, much like the Detroit Red Wings-Grand Rapids Griffins and the Detroit Tigers-West Michigan Whitecaps partnerships. Local owners will handle the day-to-day business while the Pistons control the basketball operations.
The Armor will debut in their new home at BeerCity USA during the 2014-2015 season. There are currently 17 D-League teams, but it’s believed that the NBA hopes to eventually have 30 so every club has a single-franchise affiliation.
